YOUR ENERGY DRAIN:

RELENTLESS SCHEDULE OVERLOAD

what this means and how to reclaim your time + energy

Your biggest energy leak is a calendar that never quits.

You’re in constant motion, and there’s no space to breathe. Your days and weeks are jam-packed, your mind never rests, and even downtime feels like another item on the to-do list.

Let's have a look at the personality traits that play into this dynamic (pros and cons).

STRENGTHS:

You have high energy and capacity for juggling a full life; when it comes down to a crunch, you can get a lot done in a short amount of time.

You are organized – with this many things on the calendar, your system is what keeps all the plates spinning.

You are on a mission; you have a strong sense of drive and you’re willing to fill your hours to accomplish your vision.

WEAKNESSES:

Rushing from one thing to the next can create a shallowness to life – in the skills you’re learning, in the relationships you’re building, and the emotions you allow yourself to feel (or not feel!).

Living life by the calendar and to-do lists can drown out your actual priorities; when life throws you a curveball, your first thought is how this will ruin the plan.

With a strong drive, it can be difficult to know when you have done enough and make time to rest.

IN SUMMARY:

You are a high capacity person, but just because you can doesn’t mean that you should.

You’ve been pushing through for so long, you’ve forgotten what it feels like to actually live your life.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that small decisions got you here – and small decisions can guide your way out.

WHAT YOU CAN CHANGE TODAY:

Protect 5 minutes of white space in your day.

Even one moment of stillness can begin to reset your nervous system and help you reclaim your peace.

The key here is stillness – room to exhale and hear yourself think. If you can, take five minutes outside without your phone and just breathe. There is no agenda for this time other than creating some mental space.

After today, continue to reclaim at least five minutes of quiet each day.

WISDOM FOR THE RELENTLESS SCHEDULER:

"The problem is that perpetually doing, without ever tuning in to the center of our being, is the equivalent of fueling a mighty ship by tossing all its navigational equipment into the furnace."

Martha Beck

"A busy life is not a symbol of status. It's a symptom of trying to do too much for too many people … Unscheduled time isn't wasted. It's invested in well-being."

Adam Grant

YOUR NEXT STEP THIS MONTH:

Let go of one thing each week that doesn’t serve you.

One obligation. One expectation. One thing you keep saying yes to that no longer aligns with the life you actually want. You do not have to do everything. You are allowed to release what is no longer meant for you.

This is not saying no for the sake of saying no – this is clearing the runway for saying “yes” to the things that really matter with joy and energy.

Pro tip:

If find yourself saying “yes” to too many things because it’s difficult to turn down requests in real time, hit the pause button. Ask for time to check your calendar, consult with your spouse, or just take some extra time so you can assess the request and the bandwidth it will require without the pressure of answering right away.

WHAT YOU CAN CHANGE THIS YEAR:

If you never feel like you can rest, it’s because you haven’t decided what success actually means to you — not what the world tells you it should be.

Your big picture next step: Journal about what a successful life looks in your mind’s eye. Get detailed; write about the dollar amount, the relationships, your health, the size of your company, the way your workday/workweek looks, how many times you eat Sweetgreen in a week or time you set aside for travel each year – this is your image of success! Don’t play small!
